Our Press Release:

The public consultation to choose the Mediterranean flag ended today at 14:00 Italian time.
The initiative “A flag for the Mediterranean” was conceived by the Italian writer Simone Perotti and launched by the sailing, cultural, scientific and social expedition “Progetto Mediterranea”, which sailed 20,000 miles throughout the Mediterranean, Black Sea, Atlantic, from 2013 to 2019 in search and the Mediterranean identity and roots. In addition to the 50 “Mediterranei” who carried out and supported it, 450 people took part in this expedition.

The initiative “let’s draw together the flag of our world” saw the response of almost 900 designers, artists, but also ordinary people, children, enthusiasts who, from 4 May to 15 June, sent 1,002 flag drawings accompanied by a brief concept note to explain their values. On 15 June a committee of graphic designers, photographers, poets and ordinary Mediterranean citizens selected the 4 most representative flags, which were then published and disseminated by Progetto Mediterranea and its Media Partners: Linea Blu – Rai 1, Bolina monthly magazine, La Stampa newspaper, in collaboration with the technical partner “Genova for Yachting“. Finally, since 18 June, the web and the public voted, giving way to a breath-taking head-to-head that saw three of the four flags win alternatively the people’s vote. Today at 14:00 the deadline to vote expired, and the favourite flag emerged, first for a handful of votes. Overall, 5,803 people voted.
Here are the results with indication of the flags according to the link number used for voting:

“I am enthusiastic, even moved”, the writer Simone Perotti said, “and not only because today the Flag of the Mediterranean sub-continent is born, but because for the first time, aroused by our proposal, thousands of people have looked at their world and conceived Lebanon, Portugal, Georgia, the Balkans, Jordan as parts of a single continent. The Mediterranean Sea is not the Tyrrhenian or the Adriatic, it is much more. Today, many people know at least the real perimeter of the great Mediterranean, an area of 30 countries, 3 continents, a thousand cultures and as many differences. The real “Sixth Continent”, where 400 million people live and where the greatest cultural and social wealth of the planet is concentrated”.
“This flag”, Simone Perotti stated, “is the first step, a symbol of peace and integration, of coexistence in diversity that will inevitably and necessarily lead to the future “United States of the Mediterranean”. This is, among others, what Europe urgently needs for its own survival”. “For this reason,” Perotti concluded, “we will send this flag to the 30 Heads of State of the Mediterranean countries, to EU leaders, to Italian authorities. And above all we will proudly hoist it on our boat Mediterranea”.
The flag will be hoisted aboard the sailing boat Mediterranea for the first time on 24 July with a public ceremony in Porto Maurizio, Imperia. The Authors will be present.
